Free fitness programme to get people from Couch to 5k

Residents are being encouraged to spring into action and join a free running group to get them from ‘Couch to 5k’.

The fun, informal running group is for complete beginners and starts on Thursday 9 March, 10.30am at Malvern Town Football Club.

The 12 week programme has been set up by Malvern Hills District Council and Fortis Living, and aims to help people lead a more active lifestyle and improve fitness and well-being.

Running leaders Rachel Vann and Rachel Reed will provide advice and support, to help people progress to an improved level of fitness. They will also be offering a fun walking group, starting an hour before Couch to 5k.

Couch to 5k is a national running programme that has been designed to get people from the couch and gradually work up to running five kilometres in just 12 weeks.

Cllr David Watkins, Portfolio Holder for Healthier Communities at Malvern Hills District Council said: “This programme is a great way to improve fitness levels gradually, in a welcoming and encouraging environment. We want to support residents who are looking to improve their fitness and well-being and encourage people to join and get out and about in the fresh air”.

Chris Reed, Community Development Team Leader at Fortis Living said: “We run a programme of exercise classes in community venues, both for our tenants and for others in the community, and we've seen what a difference getting active has made to people's confidence. We work closely with partners like Malvern Hills District Council, Freedom Leisure and Malvern Town Football Club and we're very excited to be jointly launching these new walking and beginners' running groups”.
