The Commandery – Battle of Worcester Weekend 'A Civilian's Story'

Throughout the weekend, characters from 1651 will divulge their fascinating stories of Worcester as it prepared for the final battle of the English Civil War. Each civilian, from vicar to surgeon, also has a special skill to share with those who encounter them.
 
The Royalist City Official will greet new arrivals and visitors can witness the Wylde family as they turf out pillagers and plunderers or, if they're brave enough, be recruited by the Parliamentarian spy to help Cromwell's cause.
 
In the grounds of The Commandery a living history encampment will reveal many aspects of civilian life, including 17th Century cooking and traditional children's games. Young recruits to the militia can get fitted for battle and join the military exercises.
 
Sarah Bourne, Commandery Events Organiser, says: “We want to give our visitors a real sense of life at the end of August 1651 by introducing them to the fascinating variety of people who were involved and giving them an exceptionally fun day out this bank holiday weekend."
 
There will be a variety of different activities and demonstrations all weekend at The Commandery including musket firing, a special picnic spot in the gardens and cakes and lunches in the lovely canal-side cafe.
 
In the run-up to the event, a series of 'Fighting, Food & Fashion' workshops encourage families to become English Civil War experts - from learning to forage for pottage stew, to joining the English Civil War training camp. 
 
Entry to The Commandery and the special event is free to all Commandery card holders and Worcester City residents on production of a Worcester City Council tax bill. Otherwise entry is £5.50 for adults, £2.50 for children and a family ticket costs just £13. Visitors can bring a picnic and stay all day, or enjoy refreshments from the canal-side Café.
